Highlights from the Event

The bird walk at SSB Sure Shot Academy, Bengaluru turned out to be an exciting and species-rich outing, revealing how even educational campuses can support impressive urban biodiversity. The walk featured a lively mix of familiar garden and campus birds, with Common Myna, House Crow, Black Drongo, Oriental Magpie-Robin, Indian Robin, and Spotted Dove seen across open spaces and built-up edges. Flowering and fruiting trees were especially productive, attracting Purple Sunbird, Purple-rumped Sunbird, Pale-billed Flowerpecker, Common Iora, and Indian White-eye, while Coppersmith Barbet and White-cheeked Barbet added both color and sound to the morning. Smaller insectivorous birds such as Common Tailorbird, Ashy Prinia, Grey-breasted Prinia, Cinereous Tit, Spot-breasted Fantail, and Booted Warbler made the walk especially rewarding for attentive observers.

The diversity of the campus was further highlighted by several standout sightings across different habitat layers. Raptors such as Shikra, Black Kite, and Brahminy Kite brought excitement overhead, while Spotted Owlet offered a memorable highlight from the tree cover. Larger and more charismatic species including Indian Peafowl, Indian Grey Hornbill, Greater Coucal, and Rose-ringed Parakeet added strong visual appeal, while White-throated Kingfisher, White-browed Wagtail, and Eastern Cattle Egret hinted at the value of nearby water-influenced areas. The presence of Asian Green Bee-eater, Black-rumped Flameback, Small Minivet, Pied Bushchat, and both Red-whiskered and White-browed Bulbuls further reflected the ecological richness of the site. Altogether, the checklist of 42 species made the walk a highly engaging and educational experience, demonstrating the remarkable birdlife that thrives within Bengaluru’s green urban spaces.
