Bird Walk at Janeshwar Mishra Park, Lucknow

About Janeshwar Mishra Park

Janeshwar Mishra Park is one of Asia’s largest urban parks and a remarkable green refuge in the heart of Lucknow. Spread across nearly 376 acres, the park combines landscaped gardens with patches of woodland, grassland, wetlands and large artificial lakes, creating a surprisingly diverse urban habitat. Rows of native and ornamental trees such as neem, amaltas, gulmohar, peepal and banyan provide shade and ecological value, while open lawns and water bodies attract butterflies, dragonflies and small mammals. Inspired by London’s Hyde Park, Janeshwar Mishra Park blends recreation with ecology, offering cycling trails, bird-friendly wetlands and quiet natural corners that contrast beautifully with the surrounding urban skyline. During sunrise and winter mornings, mist drifting over the lakes gives the park an almost wilderness-like atmosphere despite being located within a rapidly expanding city.
For birdwatchers, the park has become one of Lucknow’s most rewarding urban birding destinations. Its lakes and marshy edges attract ducks, herons, egrets, kingfishers and migratory winter visitors, while wooded sections shelter barbets, parakeets, owls, sunbirds and raptors. The mix of aquatic and terrestrial habitats allows birdlife to thrive throughout the year, making every season feel different for visitors. However, the park also faces challenges common to large urban green spaces, including pressure from increasing footfall, littering, water pollution and the long-term impacts of urban expansion around its boundaries. Maintaining water quality, preserving native vegetation and balancing recreation with biodiversity conservation remain crucial for the park’s ecological future. Even so, Janeshwar Mishra Park stands as a powerful example of how large urban landscapes can support both wildlife and public life, offering Lucknow an essential pocket of nature amid its growing metropolis.
