Common birds of Barvi Reserve Forest
Barvi Forest Range is one of the important birding landscapes near Thane, supporting a rich diversity of over 220 recorded bird species across forests, wetlands, grasslands, and water bodies. The region is home to a fascinating mix of resident and migratory birds, making it active throughout the year for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Commonly sighted forest birds include the Indian Pitta, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Indian Paradise-Flycatcher, Spot-breasted Fantail, Puff-throated Babbler, Brown-cheeked Fulvetta, White-rumped Shama, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, and Black-naped Monarch. The forests also echo with calls of Asian Koel, Common Hawk-Cuckoo, Jungle Owlet, Brown Wood-Owl, and Indian Cuckoo during different seasons.
The mosaic habitat around Barvi also supports impressive raptors and wetland birds such as Crested Serpent-Eagle, Changeable Hawk-Eagle, Booted Eagle, Shikra, Painted Stork, Asian Openbill, River Tern, Little Cormorant, Indian Cormorant, egrets, and lapwings. Colourful species like the Alexandrine Parakeet, Plum-headed Parakeet, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Black-hooded Oriole, Indian Golden Oriole, Vigors’s Sunbird, and White-throated Kingfisher add vibrancy to the landscape. During winter, migratory visitors including Greenish Warbler, Taiga Flycatcher, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Western Yellow Wagtail, and Common Rosefinch can also be observed.
