Summary of Walk
The guided bird walk along Thano Road, led by Devansh Raghav, brought together two participants for an immersive morning exploring the forested landscapes on the outskirts of Dehradun. The walk introduced participants to the rich birdlife of the Shivalik foothills while encouraging careful observation of bird calls, plumage, and behaviour. Moving through woodland habitats, the group discussed the importance of forest conservation and the role these ecosystems play in supporting a wide variety of bird species. The outing resulted in an impressive 41 bird species, reflecting the exceptional biodiversity of the region.
Among the highlights were sightings of the White-crested Laughingthrush, the colourful Black-rumped Flameback, and the striking Grey Hornbill, all of which became memorable moments for the participants. The forest also yielded several other woodland birds that showcased the ecological richness of the area. Thano Road remains one of Dehradun’s productive birding locations, offering excellent opportunities to observe Himalayan foothill species within a peaceful natural setting. The walk successfully combined birdwatching with conservation awareness, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation for the forests and the remarkable biodiversity they support.
