About Kalatang
Kalatang is situated within the forested landscapes of the Andaman Islands, where dense tropical vegetation, evergreen forest, streams and surrounding coastal habitats create an exceptional setting for birdwatching. The Andaman Islands are geographically isolated from mainland India, and this isolation has contributed to the evolution of a distinctive bird community containing several endemic species and island-specific forms. Kalatang’s forest environment provides a combination of mature trees, understory vegetation, fruiting plants and natural clearings that support insectivorous, frugivorous and nectar-feeding birds. The relatively undisturbed forest habitats are particularly valuable for species that depend on continuous tree cover.
Birdwatching in Kalatang offers an opportunity to experience the unique avifauna of the Andaman Islands rather than simply encountering widespread mainland species. Common birds of Kalatang
The bird community recorded from Kalatang is particularly notable for its concentration of Andaman endemics and characteristic island birds. The Andaman Crake, Andaman Bulbul, Andaman Flowerpecker, Andaman Serpent-Eagle, Andaman Woodpecker and Andaman Cuckoo-Dove represent the distinctive avifauna of the islands. Other colourful forest species such as Ruddy Kingfisher and Scarlet Minivet add to the diversity, while White-headed Starling and Freckle-breasted Woodpecker further demonstrate the range of habitats used by birds in the area.
