About Karanji Lake
Karanji Lake is a prominent urban wetland located at the foothills of the Chamundi Hills in Mysuru, Karnataka. Spread across a scenic landscape surrounded by trees, gardens, and natural vegetation, the lake forms an important habitat for a variety of aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. The wetland is part of the larger Mysuru Zoo landscape and is well known for its tranquil setting, rich vegetation, and diverse birdlife. Its open water, marshy edges, islands, and tree cover provide suitable habitats for feeding, nesting, and roosting birds.
Karanji Lake is one of Mysuru’s popular birding destinations and supports a rich assemblage of resident as well as migratory birds. The combination of aquatic habitats and surrounding woodland makes it possible to observe waterbirds, raptors, woodland species, and passerines within a relatively compact area. The lake is particularly rewarding during the early morning when bird activity is high, while winter can bring additional migratory visitors. Its accessibility and biodiversity also make it an excellent location for nature walks, birdwatching, photography, and environmental education.
