Bird Walk at Turahalli Tree Park, Bangalore, Karnataka

About Turahalli Tree Park

Turahalli Tree Park, located on the southern edge of Bengaluru, is one of the city’s last remaining dry deciduous forests and an important extension of the Bengaluru Urban Forest ecosystem. The park is characterised by rocky granite outcrops, native scrub vegetation, grasslands, and woodland patches that support a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. Home to butterflies, reptiles, small mammals, and numerous bird species, Turahalli offers a refreshing escape into nature and is one of Bengaluru’s most popular destinations for birdwatching and wildlife photography.
The varied habitats attract woodland, scrubland, and grassland birds throughout the year, while the surrounding forest provides vital ecological connectivity within the rapidly growing city. However, urban expansion, habitat fragmentation, invasive plant species, and recreational pressure continue to threaten this valuable green space. Conserving Turahalli’s native vegetation is essential for safeguarding Bengaluru’s biodiversity.

Summary of Walk

Turahalli Tree Park in Bengaluru hosted a bird walk on 13 September with 14 participants led by guide Uma Vaijnath. As one of the city’s last large forest patches, Turahalli remains a valuable green refuge, known among local birders for its dense native tree cover and the varied woodland birdlife it supports. The group spent the morning walking the park’s shaded trails, observing birds moving through the canopy and undergrowth while learning about the forest’s ecology along the way. Turahalli’s mix of habitats continues to make it one of Bengaluru’s most rewarding urban birding spots, and the walk gave participants a good sense of just how much birdlife this green pocket within the city can hold.
