About Ratna Lake
Ratna Lake in Bopal, Ahmedabad, is a wetland landscape surrounded by the rapidly developing urban environment of the city. The lake combines open water with shallow edges and surrounding areas of vegetation, creating a range of habitats within a relatively compact space. Seasonal changes in rainfall and water levels can alter the extent of open water and exposed margins, influencing how the landscape is used by birds throughout the year. The surrounding trees, open spaces, and built-up areas add further habitat variety, making the lake an accessible location for observing both wetland and common urban birds.
Like many urban wetlands, Ratna Lake faces pressure from surrounding development and increasing human activity. Changes in land use, water quality, waste, disturbance, and the condition of the lake edges can affect its ecological health. Common birds of Ratna Lake
Ratna Lake supports a mix of wetland, open-country, and urban birds. Wetland species include Lesser Whistling-Duck, Knob-billed Duck, Little Grebe, Little Cormorant, Black-headed Ibis, Red-naped Ibis, Little Egret, and Black-winged Stilt. Common terrestrial species such as Common Myna, Jungle Babbler, Black Drongo, Rock Pigeon, and doves are also present around the lake. Asian Green Bee-eater and Rose-ringed Parakeet add to the diversity, while Asian Koel and Little Swift are associated with the surrounding landscape. Red-wattled Lapwing and other water-associated birds further reflect the variety of habitats available around Ratna Lake.
