Bird Walk at Perur puttuvikki lake, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

About Perur puttuvikki lake

Perur–Puttuvikki Lake is an important wetland landscape in the western part of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, situated close to the foothills of the Western Ghats. The lake and its surrounding areas include open water, shallow wetland margins, vegetation, agricultural land, and patches of trees, creating a diverse habitat for birds and other wildlife. Its location within the Coimbatore wetland network makes it an important ecological space in a landscape increasingly influenced by urbanisation. The wetland also contributes to local water retention and provides a valuable refuge for wildlife.
The lake is a rewarding birding destination, particularly during the early morning when birds are most active. Its open water and marshy edges attract a variety of waterbirds, while the surrounding vegetation and agricultural areas support passerines, insectivores, raptors, and other terrestrial species. Seasonal variations in water levels can influence bird abundance and diversity, and the winter months may bring migratory ducks, waders, and other visitors. The proximity of the Western Ghats further adds to the ecological significance of the area, making Perur–Puttuvikki Lake a valuable site for birdwatching, nature observation, and environmental awareness.
