Bird Walk at Mavoor wetlands, Kozhikode, KL

About Mavoor Islands

Mavoor Island, near Kozhikode in Kerala, is a scenic wetland and riverine landscape surrounded by waterways, vegetation, agricultural areas, and patches of trees. The island and its surrounding wetlands form part of the rich coastal and lowland ecosystem of northern Kerala, providing a mosaic of habitats for birds and other wildlife. The presence of water channels, muddy banks, grasses, shrubs, and tree cover creates suitable conditions for feeding, nesting, and roosting, making the area an interesting destination for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
The diverse wetland and terrestrial habitats around Mavoor Island support both resident and seasonal bird species. Early mornings are particularly rewarding for birdwatching, when waterbirds can be seen feeding along the banks while kingfishers, bee-eaters, drongos, sunbirds, and other terrestrial species are active in the surrounding vegetation. Seasonal changes in water levels and vegetation can influence bird diversity, while winter and migration periods may bring additional waterbirds and waders. The relatively peaceful setting and proximity to Kozhikode make Mavoor Island a valuable local site for exploring Kerala’s wetland biodiversity.
