Agora Park supports a good variety of resident birds, with Indian Peafowl being a particularly prominent sighting, with 32 individuals recorded. The park’s open areas and vegetation also attract Gray Francolins, doves, Indian Robins, babblers, and bulbuls, while trees provide habitat for Rose-ringed Parakeets, Asian Koels, Black Drongos, and Oriental Magpie-Robins. Raptors such as Black-winged Kite and Shikra add further diversity, while Common Hoopoe can be seen foraging in open ground. The presence of Yellow-eyed Babblers, Large Gray Babblers, and Jungle Babblers highlights the value of the park’s scrubby vegetation. Five nature lovers, students, and bird watchers joined guide Shalini Mehra at Agora Park within the RTU Kota campus, exploring the vibrant urban biodiversity found along the campus’s designated walking trails and green quadrangles. The group practised quiet, ethical birdwatching throughout, learning essential field identification techniques and observing bird behaviour up close in a setting that showed just how much wildlife an urban campus habitat can support when left with enough greenery, tree cover, and water sources close by.
The walk produced 34 recorded species, with the White Wagtail, Purple Sunbird, and Indian Roller among the standout highlights, alongside sightings of the Indian Grey Hornbill, White-throated Kingfisher, Red-vented Bulbul, Spotted Dove, and Black Kite across the campus grounds. Participants shared enthusiastic feedback afterwards, noting how the guided session sharpened their field skills and deepened their appreciation for the biodiversity present in everyday urban green spaces around them. The morning reinforced the broader message that conservation-minded observation can happen anywhere, even within a busy university campus, given the right guidance, patience, and attention to detail, and several students said they planned to keep an eye out for the same species on their daily walks across campus going forward, treating the walk as the start of an ongoing habit rather than a one-off outing.
