Bird Walk at Chandana Cheruvu, Hyderabad

About Chandana Cheruvu

Chandana Cheruvu is a freshwater lake in the Hyderabad region, surrounded by a mix of residential development, open land, vegetation, and other human-modified landscapes. Like several urban and peri-urban water bodies around Hyderabad, the lake provides an important habitat patch within an increasingly developed environment. Its open water, shallow margins, grasses, shrubs, and surrounding trees create suitable conditions for aquatic life and a variety of birds, while also contributing to local water retention and ecological connectivity.
The lake can be an interesting birding location, particularly in the early morning when bird activity is highest. The combination of open water and surrounding vegetation attracts waterbirds as well as terrestrial species that use the area for feeding, nesting, and roosting. Seasonal changes in water levels and vegetation can influence the diversity and abundance of birds, with winter potentially bringing migratory waterbirds and waders. Chandana Cheruvu therefore offers an opportunity to observe urban wetland biodiversity and highlights the importance of conserving smaller lakes within Hyderabad’s expanding landscape.
