Bird Walk at Ganeshpura Lake, Mehsana Gujarat

About Ganeshwara Lake

Ganeshpura, a rural village area in the Mehsana district of Gujarat, lies roughly 17–45 km from Mehsana city depending on the exact location in the region, and is known more for its serene countryside and ecotourism experiences than major wetland fame. The area offers visitors a peaceful rural escape with opportunities to enjoy traditional village life, organic farming, and nature activities through initiatives like ecotourism cooperatives that promote sustainable living and outdoor experiences close to nature. While Ganeshpura itself does not appear prominently in major birding or wetland listings, the broader Mehsana region features several lakes and ponds that attract local birds and provide scenic picnic spots for visitors.
For birdwatching and wetland experiences near Ganeshpura, many visitors travel a short distance to nearby lakes and water bodies in the district, as well as to the Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary, a well-known freshwater lake and bird habitat in Mehsana district. Thol Lake supports a wide variety of waterfowl and migratory birds, especially in the winter months, making it one of North Gujarat’s most important birding sites. Its shallow waters, marsh fringes, and open sky create rich feeding and resting grounds for ducks, cranes, flamingos, and other species, drawing birdwatchers from across the region.

Common birds of Ganeshwara Lake

Ganeshpura Lake supports a diverse assemblage of common wetland and terrestrial bird species, reflecting the ecological richness of its open water, marshy edges, and surrounding scrub and agricultural landscapes. Water-dependent birds such as Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Moorhen, Common Coot, Marsh Sandpiper, and Oriental Darter are regularly observed using the lake for feeding and roosting. The presence of large wading birds including Grey Heron, Great Egret, Little Egret, and Cattle Egret indicates the availability of shallow waters rich in fish and aquatic invertebrates. The lake and its adjoining habitats also sustain a variety of raptors and land birds. Predatory species such as Shaheen Falcon and Oriental Honey Buzzard are seen soaring over the area, while Eurasian Collared Dove and Indian Peafowl are common in open fields and village fringes. Shrub and grassland birds including Jungle Babbler, Common Babbler, Ashy Prinia, and Plain Prinia are frequently encountered, alongside familiar species such as Oriental Magpie-Robin, Indian Robin, House Sparrow, and Yellow-throated Sparrow. Together, these birds highlight Ganeshpura Lake’s importance as a multi-habitat ecosystem supporting both wetland and terrestrial avifauna.
