Bird Walk at Gorewada Lake Nagpur

About Gorewada Lake

Spread across the northwestern edge of Nagpur city, Gorewada Lake is a scenic freshwater reservoir bordered by dry deciduous forest, scrub, and open grassland. Originally built as a drinking water source, the lake and its surrounding catchment have evolved into one of central India’s most accessible birding hotspots. Its calm waters, marshy fringes, and wooded slopes create a mosaic of habitats that support a rich diversity of wildlife.
Over 250 bird species have been recorded here, ranging from resident wetland dwellers like the Indian Spot-billed Duck, Grey-headed Swamphen, and Little Cormorant to migratory visitors such as Northern Shoveler, Garganey, and Marsh Harrier in winter. Waders including Black-winged Stilt, Common Sandpiper, and Wood Sandpiper frequent the shallows, while nearby trees host Coppersmith Barbets, Black Drongos, and Small Minivets. Mammals like nilgai, wild boar, and rhesus macaques are also occasional sights along the periphery. Beyond its ecological importance, Gorewada Lake serves as a peaceful recreational escape for city dwellers, offering opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and quiet walks amidst nature’s soundtrack.
