About Kannahalli Lake
Kannahalli Lake is a peaceful freshwater wetland surrounded by open grasslands, marshes, agricultural fields, and scattered native trees, creating a rich mosaic of habitats for wildlife. The lake’s open waters, reed beds, and seasonal vegetation support a diverse range of aquatic plants, fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and birds, making it an important ecological refuge in the region. Its tranquil setting and relatively undisturbed habitat provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching, nature photography, and observing wetland biodiversity throughout the year.
Kannahalli Lake is particularly valued for its rich assemblage of resident waterbirds and grassland species, while seasonal migrants further enhance its avian diversity during the winter months. Like many traditional lakes, however, it faces growing challenges from pollution, encroachment, invasive vegetation, and increasing human disturbance. Kannahalli Lake is a rewarding destination for birdwatchers, with its wetlands and surrounding grasslands supporting a rich diversity of resident birds. Waterbirds such as Indian Spot-billed Ducks, Eurasian Coots, Little Grebes, Little Cormorants, Gray-headed Swamphens, White-breasted Waterhens, Purple Herons, and the Near Threatened Black-headed Ibis thrive in the lake’s marshy habitats. The surrounding grasslands and scrub are equally lively, hosting species including Jerdon’s Bushlark, Jungle Prinia, Ashy Prinia, Common Tailorbird, Asian Green Bee-eater, and Black Drongo. Raptors such as the Brahminy Kite and Black Kite patrol the skies, while Indian Peafowl, Greater Coucals, Rose-ringed Parakeets, and Asian Koels add colour and character, making Kannahalli Lake an enjoyable birding destination throughout the year.
