Common birds of Lakaki Lake

Ladaki Lake in Pune supports a vibrant mix of aquatic and terrestrial bird species, making it a notable urban biodiversity hotspot. The lake’s calm waters often host flocks of Indian Spot-billed Ducks and Eurasian Coots, while Little Cormorants and Indian Pond-Herons can be seen fishing along the edges. The open surroundings attract Red-wattled Lapwings and soaring Black Kites, while the nearby trees provide perching sites for Indian Gray Hornbills, Rose-ringed Parakeets, and Coppersmith Barbets. Colorful and lively species such as the Common Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher, Purple Sunbird, and Purple-rumped Sunbird add charm to the lake’s landscape. Among the urban dwellers, House Crows, Rock Pigeons, Common Mynas, Red-vented Bulbuls, and Red-whiskered Bulbuls are frequent visitors, contributing to the lake’s everyday activity. The presence of Gray Wagtails and Dusky Crag-Martins further highlights the diversity of habitats within this small but ecologically significant wetland nestled in Pune’s cityscape

Summary of Walk

At Lakaki Lake, the walk welcomed 5 participants as part of the Youth Birders Month activity. The event also celebrated bird week in Maharashtra to honour two legends “Dr. Salim Ali and Shri Maruti Chitampalli who are pioneers of bird studies. It involved guided bird walk led by Arjit Jere and Kamlakar and bird games planned for children. Group spotted around 15 species including Mallard, Eurasian Coot, Shikra, Indian Grey-Hornbill.
The smaller group size made the experience more intimate and interactive, giving everyone ample time for questions and close observations. The combination of heritage celebration, youth engagement, and guided exploration made this walk a meaningful tribute to India’s birding legacy.
