About Lotus pond, HAU lake
Lotus Pond, located within the Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) campus in Hisar, Haryana, is a small wetland habitat surrounded by the university’s green spaces and landscaped areas. The pond provides a mix of open water, aquatic vegetation, and vegetated edges, creating a suitable environment for birds in an otherwise developed campus landscape. The surrounding trees, shrubs, and open grounds add further habitat variety and provide feeding, resting, and nesting opportunities for different bird species. The character of the pond and its vegetation can change with seasonal rainfall and water levels, making it an interesting spot for observing birds throughout the year.
As part of the HAU campus, the pond is influenced by regular human activity and management of the surrounding landscape. Maintaining clean water, healthy aquatic vegetation, and undisturbed sections along the pond edges can help retain its value as a local bird habitat. Protecting such small wetlands and green spaces is important in an urbanising landscape, as they provide refuge for both wetland-dependent and common terrestrial birds.

Summary of Walk
A small, focused group of two participants joined guide Jithin J R at the Lotus Pond, HAU Lake in Hisar, for a walk that made the most of its intimate size to observe birds up close and in detail. The relaxed pace let the group take in behavioural moments that a larger crowd might easily have missed.
The walk produced 28 different species, including an Indian Grey Hornbill, Alexandrine Parakeet and Indian Silverbill among the highlights. Behavioural sightings added extra charm to the morning — a Laughing Dove was seen gathering nest-building material, while an Indian Peafowl strutted by with three chicks in tow. It was a rewarding, closely observed outing that showcased the lake’s steady birdlife in fine detail.
