About Maldevta-Sahastradhara Link Road
The Maldevta–Sahastradhara Link Road is a scenic route through the foothills of the Doon Valley, connecting the green landscapes around Maldevta with the Sahastradhara area. The road passes through a varied landscape of forest patches, agricultural fields, scrub, streams, rocky slopes and scattered trees, creating a mosaic of habitats for birds. The proximity of the Shivalik foothills and the wider Himalayan landscape adds to the ecological diversity of the area. Seasonal streams and watercourses provide important resources for wildlife, while the vegetation along the road offers feeding, nesting and sheltering opportunities for a variety of species. The route is particularly attractive during the early morning, when bird activity is high and the cooler conditions make it ideal for birdwatching.
The transition between open valley habitats and foothill vegetation makes this stretch especially interesting for observing both plains and Himalayan-associated bird species. Different sections of the road can offer very different birding experiences, from open-country species around agricultural areas to woodland birds in more vegetated stretches. The surrounding landscape also forms part of a broader green corridor connecting natural habitats around Dehradun and the lower Himalayan foothills. With increasing development and traffic in parts of the region, maintaining natural vegetation, protecting stream corridors and minimising disturbance to wildlife are important for conserving the area’s ecological value. For birdwatchers, the Maldevta–Sahastradhara Link Road offers an accessible way to explore the diverse birdlife of the Doon Valley and its surrounding foothills.

The Maldevta–Sahastradhara Link Road supports a diverse bird community reflecting its combination of open areas, scrub, woodland and foothill habitats. The birding highlights include Indian Peafowl, Indian Gray Hornbill, Gray-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater and Asian Green Bee-eater, representing the variety of habitats found along the route. The presence of Himalayan Bulbul alongside Red-vented Bulbul is particularly interesting, while Jungle Babbler, Brahminy Starling, Common Myna and Oriental Magpie-Robin are commonly associated with the surrounding vegetation and open spaces. Open stretches support Long-tailed Shrike, Pied Bushchat and Brown Rock Chat, while the sky above the road can be active with Wire-tailed Swallow and Eastern Red-rumped Swallow. Woodland patches provide opportunities for species such as the Indian Gray Hornbill and pygmy woodpecker. Common Hoopoe, White-throated Kingfisher and Black Kite add further variety. Overall, the species recorded demonstrate how the meeting of valley, agricultural, scrub and foothill habitats creates a productive birding landscape.
