About Pallom, Kottayam
Pallom, located near Kottayam in Kerala, is surrounded by an intricate network of rivers, canals, paddy fields, marshes, and freshwater wetlands that form part of the region’s rich backwater ecosystem. The area’s lush vegetation, aquatic habitats, and tree-lined waterways support an exceptional diversity of birds, fish, amphibians, and other wildlife. Its peaceful wetland landscapes make Pallom a rewarding destination for birdwatching, photography, and experiencing Kerala’s unique natural heritage.
The wetlands of Pallom provide essential breeding, feeding, and roosting habitats for numerous resident waterbirds, while migratory species arrive during the winter to further enrich the region’s biodiversity. Like many wetlands across Kerala, these habitats face threats from urbanisation, pollution, wetland reclamation, and habitat disturbance. Protecting these interconnected freshwater ecosystems is crucial for conserving the rich birdlife they support.

Summary of Walk
Guided by Narendran MM, six participants joined the bird walk at Pallom in Kottayam, a scenic wetland stretch in the heart of Kerala’s backwater country. For most of the group, this marked their very first birding experience, and the rich wetland habitat here provided the perfect introduction to the joys of birdwatching.
The walk yielded an impressive 33 species, with the Oriental Darter, Baya Weaver and Stork-billed Kingfisher among the highlights, alongside sightings of White-throated and Common Kingfishers, Purple Herons and Bronze-winged Jacanas. Participants were delighted to watch Baya Weavers busy building their intricate hanging nests and Darters carrying nesting material back to their young, even spotting a few juvenile Darters in the nest. Listening to bird calls and learning to identify species by ear was a pleasant surprise for the group, making this a wonderfully engaging first step into the world of birding.
