About Ratna Lake
Ratna Lake in Bopal, Ahmedabad, is a wetland landscape surrounded by the rapidly developing urban environment of the city. The lake combines open water with shallow edges and surrounding areas of vegetation, creating a range of habitats within a relatively compact space. Seasonal changes in rainfall and water levels can alter the extent of open water and exposed margins, influencing how the landscape is used by birds throughout the year. The surrounding trees, open spaces, and built-up areas add further habitat variety, making the lake an accessible location for observing both wetland and common urban birds.
Like many urban wetlands, Ratna Lake faces pressure from surrounding development and increasing human activity. Changes in land use, water quality, waste, disturbance, and the condition of the lake edges can affect its ecological health. Maintaining clean water, natural or vegetated margins, and suitable open spaces around the lake can help preserve its value for birds and other urban wildlife. Protecting these smaller wetland habitats is especially important as Ahmedabad continues to expand.
