Bird Walk at Shela Godhavi Canal, Ahmedabad, Gujarat

The 6 September 2026 walk along Shela Godhavi Canal Road in Ahmedabad began early at 6:15 AM from Star Point, with 22 participants joining guide Pankaj Maheria for a lively morning of birding along the canal-side habitat. The early start rewarded the group with excellent light and active birdlife right from the outset, as the group moved steadily along the water’s edge through the cool morning air and quiet residential outskirts of the city. Starting at first light gave the group the added pleasure of watching the canal wake up, with birds becoming steadily more active as the morning progressed. Highlights included the Tricoloured Munia, Spotted Flycatcher, and Yellow-eyed Babbler, three species that generated real excitement among the group. Participants also spotted three species of bulbuls and three types of babblers, along with ibises and egrets feeding along the canal’s edges. Pankaj’s early-morning route planning and sharp eye for movement along the water made for a productive and enjoyable walk, giving the group a strong sense of the birdlife thriving along Ahmedabad’s canal network. Pankaj’s familiarity with the canal’s regular residents meant the group knew exactly where to look for each species, keeping the pace brisk and the sightings coming steadily. The early start proved well worth it, and several participants said they would happily join another sunrise walk.
