SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Sanjay Van\, New Delhi
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk at Marasandra Kere\, Bangalore\, Karnataka \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bangalore\n \n \n \n \n 18 July\, 2026\n \n \n \n \n Pratiksha Powar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Marasandra Kere \n \n \n \n Marasandra Kere is a tranquil freshwater lake surrounded by marshes\, open grasslands\, agricultural fields\, and scattered native trees\, creating a rich mosaic of wetland and terrestrial habitats. The lake’s shallow waters\, reed beds\, mudflats\, and seasonal vegetation support a remarkable diversity of aquatic plants\, insects\, fish\, amphibians\, reptiles\, and birds. Its peaceful surroundings and healthy wetland ecosystem make it an excellent destination for birdwatching\, wildlife photography\, and experiencing the natural beauty of Karnataka’s traditional lakes. \n \n \n \n The lake attracts an impressive variety of resident birds throughout the year\, while seasonal migrants further enrich its biodiversity during the winter months. As with many urban and rural wetlands\, Marasandra Kere faces challenges from pollution\, encroachment\, invasive vegetation\, and changing land use around the lake. Continued habitat restoration\, responsible birding\, and community-led conservation efforts are essential to preserve this valuable wetland and its thriving birdlife. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird Guide: Pratiksha PowarShe is a passionate birdwatching guide with over seven years of birding experience in Bengaluru\, building on a lifelong interest in birds that began in the coastal landscapes of Karnataka and Goa. She enjoys sharing her knowledge of local birdlife and helping people connect with nature through engaging and memorable birding experiences.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird walk Location \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Common birds of Marasandra Kere \n \n \n \n Marasandra Kere is a rewarding birding hotspot where wetlands\, grasslands\, and surrounding scrub support a diverse range of waterbirds and woodland species. The lake is home to Black-winged Stilts\, White-breasted Waterhens\, Great Cormorants\, Eastern Cattle-Egrets\, Grey Herons\, and Red-wattled Lapwings\, while the surrounding vegetation shelters Greater Coucals\, Pied Cuckoos\, Indian Rollers\, Rose-ringed Parakeets\, and Asian Green Bee-eaters. Smaller birds such as Ashy Prinias\, Zitting Cisticolas\, White-browed Bulbuls\, Indian White-eyes\, Pale-billed Flowerpeckers\, Oriental Magpie-Robins\, Pied Bushchats\, and Eastern Red-rumped Swallows add constant activity to the landscape. Whether exploring the lake edge or scanning the open skies\, visitors are treated to an enjoyable birdwatching experience throughout the year.\n \n \n \n \n \n Ashy Prinia \n \n \n \n Asian Green Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Common Myna \n \n \n \n Black Drongo \n \n \n \n Eastern Cattle-Egret \n \n \n \n Black Kite \n \n \n \n Eastern Red-rumped Swallow \n \n \n \n Common Tailorbird \n \n \n \n Greater Coucal \n \n \n \n Grey Heron \n \n \n \n Indian Roller \n \n \n \n Indian Robin \n \n \n \n Indian White-eye \n \n \n \n Large-billed Crow \n \n \n \n Oriental Magpie-Robin \n \n \n \n Pale-billed Flowerpecker \n \n \n \n Pied Bushchat \n \n \n \n Pied Cuckoo \n \n \n \n Red-vented Bulbul \n \n \n \n Red-wattled Lapwing \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summary of Walk \n \n \n \n The guided bird walk at Marasandra Lake turned into a highly rewarding personalised birding experience with one enthusiastic participant. Exploring the roads\, gardens\, grasslands\, agricultural fields\, and lake edges allowed for an immersive morning filled with discussions on bird identification\, behaviour\, and habitat diversity. The trail began with sightings of Ashy Prinias\, Scaly-breasted Munias\, Red-whiskered Bulbuls\, while the calls of Asian Koels and Indian Peafowl echoed across the landscape. As the walk progressed towards the wetlands\, participants observed Red-wattled Lapwings\, a singing Oriental Skylark\, pairs of Great Tits\, and even a possible Rain Quail\, making every section of the route full of surprises. By the end of the morning\, an impressive 38 bird species had been recorded.\nThe wetlands proved especially productive\, with large flocks of juvenile Glossy Ibises feeding alongside Black-headed Ibises\, while Grey Herons\, Purple Herons\, Oriental Darters\, Painted Storks\, Little Grebes\, Common Kingfishers\, Eurasian Coots\, and Tricoloured Munias added to the diversity. The highlights of the walk included the Glossy Ibis\, Grey Heron\, Painted Stork\, and Tricoloured Munia\, each offering excellent opportunities to discuss wetland ecology and bird behaviour. Marasandra Lake supports an excellent mix of grassland\, agricultural\, and freshwater habitats\, making it a productive destination for birdwatchers throughout the year and an important refuge for both resident and migratory birds. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Number of Participants \n \n 0
